I am a retired doctor in Michigan who enjoys digital photography and its possibilities. For the past 8 years, I have experimented with a variety of cameras, lenses, and image software. Viewers will note a preponderance of saturated colors in my images, and I make no apologies for my preferences. Although landscape and flowers attract me the most, I am an opportunistic photographer with eclectic tastes in subject matter — hence the site name.

I have heard some “experts” brag about “doing it all in camera”, implicitly criticizing those who don’t. In truth, the most acclaimed photographers have a talent for selecting and framing their subjects. However, if the goal of photography is to accurately reproduce what the eye sees, even the best camera sensors are orders of magnitude less sensitive than the eye. The camera records colors and luminance as computer bytes that must be interpreted on a monitor screen with imaging software. An “out-of-camera” JPEG is a product of the camera computer’s interpretation of the image in a style selected by the photographer, and the output is equipment-dependent. A RAW file contains all the digital information, but it’s similar to a music score with only notes and no other markings: it must be interpreted, and the image will reflect the photographer’s memory of what they saw, or their vision of what it might have looked like. We are talking here about artistic vs. journalistic photography; in the former, the end justifies the means.

On this site, I am displaying a few of my favorite photos. I hope you like what you see. Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, or would like to obtain prints.
